About the Currency

The Canadian Dollar has been in use since 1858 when the country decided to align itself with the US dollar in attempt to assimilate with its US neighbours. Previous to this, the country had used the Canadian pound.

The symbol for the Canadian Dollar is simply: $. However, in order to distinguish it from other dollars, such as the USD, they often use C$ or Can$ to set it apart. Nicknames for the dollar include loonie, bush, huard, and piaster. CAD banknotes come in 5, 10, 20, 50 with 100s available but very rarely used. Coins include 5, 10, and 25 cents, as well as $1 and $2 coins. 50 cents are also available, but rarely used anymore.

Exchange Rates

Given that over 75% of its exports go directly to the United States, Canada is mostly interested in the exchange rate between itself and the USA. At the time of writing, $1 US dollar is worth approximately Can$1.31 Canadian dollars. For the most accurate rates, have a look on XE.
