Other official users of the currency include Zimbabwe – a country that has adopted many international currencies as a result of not having its own. There are also a few unofficial users, including Mongolia, North Korea, Myanmar, as well as the border area of Vietnam.

About the Currency

The currency 'yuán' has been around for quite some time and is still the name for a subunit of the Renminbi to this day. When the communist party took control of large areas, however, the official bank – the People's Bank of China – created a currency of their own to use in these communist controlled areas. It was eventually named "Renminbi", which translates to mean "the people's currency".

The symbol for Renminbi is famously ¥ with banknotes including 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and ¥100. Coins include 0.1, 0.5, and ¥1 and the nickname for the currency is "Grandpa Mao".
