About the Currency

The British Pound goes way back and, in fact, is one of the oldest currencies that is still in use to this day. Its history can be traced back to as early as the Anglo Saxons. Given its lengthy history and ultimate strength, it's no surprise that the UK decided to opt out from using the Euro, and especially after the 2016 referendum that starts Britain's exit from the EU, it is highly unlikely that it will ever adopt the Euro.

The symbol for the pound is £ with its nickname being 'quid'. Coins available in GBP include 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 pence with £1 & 2 coins also available. In terms of bank notes, there are 5, 10, 20, and £50 notes.

Exchange Rates

Historically, the pound sterling has always been quite a strong currency. Whilst one pound was once nearly worth $2 USD, it has now dropped significantly to around $1.22 USD as a result of Britain's decision to leave the EU. For the most accurate rates, please visit XE.com.
