About the Currency

The Hong Kong Dollar has been around since approximately 1866 when the province set up its own mint in Causeway Bay to begin making its own currency. Prior to this, the country had only ever used foreign currencies from places like India, Spain, Mexico, and China. The symbol for the Hong Kong Dollar is the same as the USD - $. It is also sometimes abbreviated HK$ to distinguish it from other dollars. Banknotes include 10, 20, 50, 100, 150, 500, and even $1,000 with coins including 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5 and $10.
