About the Currency

The name 'Rupee' comes from the old silver coin called 'Rupiya', which was used in the early 1500s. The fact that the coins were made of silver, however, were quite devastating for the currency, as the wealthier countries were on the gold standard and a vast amount of silver had been found in the US, thus degrading the Indian Rupee's value.

The symbol for the rupee, or INR, is ₹ or Rs, as well as a range of other symbols used in various languages. The banknotes include 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and ₹1000, whilst the coins include 1, 2, 5, and ₹10.
