About the Currency

The name 'yen' in Japanese means 'round object' and their coins were inspired by the 19th century Spanish dollar coins, which had been in circulation in Japan. The Japanese government decided to make their own, so in 1871, the Japanese Yen was introduced.

The international symbol for the Japanese Yen is ¥ with bank notes available as 1000, 2000, 5000, and ¥10,000. Coins include 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, and ¥500.
