About the Currency

After WWII in 1945 when Korea was divided, the two countries created separate currencies both with the name 'won'. The name of the currency comes from the Chinese character yuán, which means 'round shape'. The currency has gone through a series of changes and valuations over the years, but ultimately, remains under the same name.

Banknotes include 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, and ₩50,000 with the coins including 10, 50, 100, and ₩500.
