About the Currency

The New Zealand Dollar was first introduced in 1967, which replaced the country's New Zealand Pound. New Zealand features a range of influential figures on their bank notes, including Sir Edmund Hillary on the NZ$5, who was one of the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Other figures include physicist Ernest Rutherford and Queen Elizabeth II.

The New Zealand Dollar symbol is, of course, $, but is often abbreviated as NZ$ in order to distinguish it from its American and Australian counterparts. The bills come in 5, 10, 20, 50, and $100 and coins comes in 10, 20, and 50 cents with 1 and $2 coins also available.

Exchange Rates
