About the Currency

The name rand comes from 'Witwatersrand', which is a ridge in the Gauteng province of South Africa known for its gold deposits. The discovery of this illustrious area ultimately helped to build the country's largest city, Johannesburg, and also, of course, inspired the name for the currency. As the wealthiest region of the country, it's no surprise that gambling in Johannesburg is a popular pastime with a good number of land based casinos present.

Rand is made up of 100 cents, which is denoted with the symbol, capital R and the cent symbolised as c. In terms of its physical presence, the rand comes in 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 notes with coins, including 10c, 20c, 50c, R1, R2, and R5.
