About the Currency

The leva was first introduced in 1881 with a value that was equivalent to the French franc at the time. The currency has undergone a series of changes over time and after Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007, it is expected that the country will eventually replace the leva with the Euro. This has been delayed, however, as Bulgaria has not yet joined the European exchange rate mechanism (ERM II), which is a criteria for changing over to the Euro.

The symbol for the Bulgarian Lev is лв with bank notes present in 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 leva and coins available in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 stotinki with 1 and 2 leva also available in coins.
